Tha Ash Fork Lady Spartan’s basketball team made history the season . For the first time in school history, the girls made the state playoffs. It was the goal of the team at the beginning of the season to be ranked at least 16th. They accomplished more than that, they ended up 8th in the final rankings. Their regular season record was 14-4 in the conference and 5-2 in the Central 1A Region. The best ever record for our girls. In the regular season the girls lost to Mogollon, who made it to the semifinals of the state playoffs, by 40 points in their first game and 24 points in their second matchup. They met up with the Mustangs again in the regional tournament. The girls knew this was going to be a tough game. They ended up losing this game in the final seconds by a score of 37-38. Because of their high ranking, the girls were able to host the first two rounds of the state playoffs. In the first round, they defeated Grand Canyon by a score of 54-14. In the second round they faced #9 ranked, Salome Frogs. This was a close and exciting game throughout! Unfortunately, we lost 33-38. Isabella Acosta, a freshman, was our top scorer with 315 points for the season. Her aggressive defense also earned her 194 steals. Gracie Staples, a junior, contributed with 156 points and 152 rebounds. Crystal Nixon, a junior, had 150 points and 110 rebounds. Her aggressive defense earned her 16 blocks and 52 steals. Andrea Vazquez, a sophomore, had 141 points and 49 steals. Andrea was also #12 in the state for 1A schools for her 3 point shooting! Aspen Bond, one of the two seniors on the team, contributed with 54 rebounds and 30 steals. Jamie Keele, our other senior, had 86 rebounds and 9 blocks. Isabella Grijalva, a junior, contributed 38 points and 68 rebounds. Eva Flores, a sophomore, had 106 points, 65 rebounds, and 42 steals. Pamela Vazquez, a junior, Laney Trovillion, a sophomore, and Sol Ayala, a sophomore, all came off the bench and contributed with their tough defense and eamwork! What an awesome season! Our challenge for next year is to make it to at least the quarterfinals of the state playoffs! Great job ladies!
